Healing Habits for Joy and Health to Try Today

Going through a rough patch? It’s normal to feel pulled down if you’re in a rut, grieving, or facing a difficult time at work or in life. But the secret to healing from your experiences is actually pretty simple: it lies in taking care of yourself. Of course, sometimes that’s easier said than done. So today, we share some tips and resources that will increase your sense of wellbeing, enabling you to live your best life.

Make Time For Yourself

We’re all caught up in the race against time as we try to get our endless to-do’s done each day. But running from one task to another without a break actually does your mental health a disservice. Instead, try to carve out little pockets of time that you reserve just for yourself throughout the day. This can reduce the strain of a difficult situation or circumstance while helping you feel more in control of your life. Use this time to spend as you wish, whether it’s by reading a book or catching up with your loved ones on the phone.

Move Your Body

A study by Springer Open demonstrated that physical activity provides physical health and psychological wellbeing for those who are grieving. It also helps boost the spirits of those undergoing chronic stress, anxiety, and depression. Try to move your body for at least 30 minutes each day to see the full benefits. Whether it’s a brisk walk, hot yoga session, or a high-intensity interval workout, you’ll find yourself with increased energy, happier hormones, and a sense of accomplishment that is truly unmatched. If you struggle with fitness, try coaching options such as Kayla Brandon's Integrative Wellness for support through the process.

Beat The Stress

According to the SLMA Journal, chronic stress is linked to six leading causes of death: lung issues, accidents, liver problems, suicide, cancer, and heart disease. In addition, over 75% of physician office visits are stress-related! This means that it is absolutely critical that you beat the stress for easy healing and a well-adjusted life. You can do this by finding a quiet space at home and meditating daily. Essentially, look for activities that focus inward and help you get mindful about the cause of the stress. Understanding potential triggers early on can help you recognize when it’s time to manage the pressure by taking some leisure time.

Let The Light In

We mean that both literally and figuratively. Light has historically been associated with healing and letting go and is a critical metaphor to incorporate into your life. Try to open the blinds or curtains more to let the sunlight stream in, or spend at least five minutes breathing in the fresh air and taking in some vitamin D. Lighting candles at nighttime is also a great way to create a cozy atmosphere and is a small step that can help you feel put-together. In addition, make space for new people and moments in life (instead of closing yourself off). This is another way you’re letting the ‘light’ in. There is nothing more joy-inducing than spontaneous moments shared with special people.

Breathe - Then Breathe Again

Deep and controlled breathing can lower blood pressure and promote feelings of relaxation and calm. Breathing techniques are also an excellent way to be mindful and reduce incidences of mental health problems. Try to do breathing exercises such as equal breathing and abdominal breathing each day. With consistent practice, you’ll see significant benefits and can go further in your breathwork practice as well.

Taking care of yourself is essential to your health, wellbeing, and self-esteem. While lighting a candle or doing a quick workout may seem like benign activities, they are actively working to instill joy and induce healing. Give them a try today and experience the transformative powers for yourself!
